Dr. Aristide Gumyusenge is a Merton C. Flemings Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT. He was born and raised in Kamonyi district, Southern Province. As one of the Rwanda Presidential Scholars, he received a BS in chemistry from Wofford College in 2015, and then a PhD in chemistry from Purdue University. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University prior to joining MIT. His research background and interests are in semiconducting polymers, their processing and characterization, and their unique role in the future of electronics. He has tackled long standing challenges in operation stability of semiconducting polymers under extreme heat and has pioneered high-temperature plastic electronics. At MIT, Dr. Gumyusenge teaches materials science courses and leads a research laboratory, the laboratory of organic materials for smart electronics (OMSE Lab). Dr. Gumyusenge is passionate about next-generation manufacturability of electronics in Rwanda, particularly for sensing and medical applications. He is also committed to mentoring the next generation of materials chemists, with particular emphasis on local talents.
